David Alvin Hughes

July 12, 1942 — August 14, 2011

Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, announces services for David Alvin Hughes, Sr., 69, of Homer who passed away on Sunday at the Northridge Medical Ctr. in Commerce. Born in Suches, he was the son of the late Luther and Flossie Griffin Hughes and was married to Ann H. Hughes of the residence. He was also preced in death by a brother, Lavoid Hughes. Mr. Hughes was the founder and director of "A Better Place Children's Home". Survivors, along with his wife, include his children, David Alvin Hughes, Jr. of White County, Scot Hughes of Douglasville, Tina VanAlstine of Murrayville, Danny Hughes of Murrayville, Dina Colley of Homer, Randy Hughes of Homer, Stephanie Hughes of Dawsonville and Nikki Hughes of Homer; siblings, M.T. Hughes of Suches, Marvin Hughes of Clermont, Daniel Hughes of Clermont, Alvin Lunsford of White County, Jackie Hughes of Danielsville and Diane Graves of Florida; 17 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday at 11 AM from the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with Rev. Chuck Morley and Rev. Jackie Kendrix officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany Christian Church Cemetery in Homer. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM and at other times at the residence.
