Rebecca Harber Dixon

June 23, 1918 — May 8, 2019

Rebecca Harber Dixon of Commerce, Georgia entered into eternal rest on May 8, 2019, at her home. Her life spanned 100 years and was distinguished throughout by her loving spirit coupled with her abiding faith. Born June 23, 1918 in Banks County, Georgia, Rebecca was the eldest child of Drucilla McCoy Harber and James Jasper Harber, Sr. Four sisters and three brothers eventually completed the family; to her parents, siblings and childhood friends she was known affectionately as Bea.
After graduating from Commerce High School in 1935, Rebecca moved to Columbia, South Carolina employed by Humble Oil Company ( later ExxonMobil). Known as Becky to her co-workers, she made life-long friends there. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor Becky served her Country joining the US Naval Reserve Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES). Within days she was on a train to Chicago courtesy of the Navy! When the war ended, she returned to civilian life in Columbia and eventually moved with Humble Oil to its new headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In 1962 Becky married LeRoy Asbury Dixon also of Charlotte. Together Roy and Becky bought a beach house in Litchfield, South Carolina that became and continues to be a beloved summer destination for their families and friends. In Charlotte Becky and Roy Enjoyed life with neighbors on Rosemary Lane and as members of Sharon Road United Methodist Church. The couple made frequent visits to her parents' home in Commerce where they celebrated many holidays with the large extended family.
Becky was a devoted and much-loved wife, daughter, sister, aunt and grandmother. She cared for her husband during his years-long illness that ended with Roy's untimely death in 1974. In 1996 after more than four decades in Charlotte, Becky returned to Commerce to live our her life in her home town.

Although Commerce had changed in the interval, Rebecca moved forward renewing old friendships and sharing life with her sisters, brothers and other relatives while making new friends, young and old, in the community. She was devoted to the Commerce First Presbyterian Church where she attended Sunday school and church until only recently when illness prevented. She cherished the friendships of her pastor, members of the church and other beloved friends who took care to assist her as she continued to live alone well past her 100th birthday. Rebecca's life was an inspiration to many. All who knew her mourn the loss of her quiet presence and wise counsel.

Rebecca was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sisters; Roberta Bolton, Mary Harrison, Janet Hicks and brothers George, Sonny and Buddy Harber. Survivors include her sister Alice Linton of Atlanta, sisters-in-law, Mildred Harber of Macon and Emily Hope Harber of Commerce. Twelve nieces and nephews as well as a host of great-nieces and nephews also survive. Her daughter-in-law Myrna Dixon, three grandsons, their wives and children all of South Carolina also survive her.

Services will be Friday May 17, 2019 at 11 A.M. from the Commerce First Presbyterian Church.
