Dr. Samuel Ausborn Vickery 84 passed away May 1, 2013.
Dr. Vickery was the son of the late Vernon and Mabel Vickery. He was preceded in death by an older brother James who was killed at 16 years of age. Dr. Vickery graduated from Commerce High School in 1946 where he play football. He attended Berry College where he met Barbara Grace Abernathy who became his wife.
After Graduation he taught school in Blackshear, Ga. Then moved back to Commerce where he taught science, coached football and eventually became principal of Commerce High School. He almost completed his PhD in Physics at the University of Georgia when he decided to attend Medical School.
Dr. Vickery graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1961. He did his rotating internship in Rome, Ga. Then returned to Commerce to practice medicine.
Dr. Vickery delivered over 3000 babies. He finally retired at age 79 after practing medicine in Commerce for 41 years. He treated and touched the lives of thousands of people.
Dr. Vickery was an active member of the Commerce First United Methodist Church . He was a Sunday School teacher, a lay Minister and was active in the administrative board. Dr. Vickery participated in numerous medical missions to Jamaica, Trinity and Tobago among others.
Dr. Vickery was active in the Commerce Lions Club and the Gideons.
Survivors include 2 daughters Gwen V. (Ken Lott) Morgan M.D. of Cordele and Melanie V. (Dr. Chris) Stanley of Cordele, one son Ricky (Becky) Vickery of Commerce, a brother Allen Vickery of Commerce , one sister Winona Bridges of Kings Mountain , N.C. Seven Grandchildren, 5 Great Grandchildren, 3 Step Grandsons and 1 Step Granddaughter.
Funeral Services will be Saturday at 2 PM from the Commerce First United Methodist Church with Dr. David Bowen officiating with burial in Jackson Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in at Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, Ga. Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM.
